BBC Documentary - The Joy Of Disco

 

Documentary about how a much-derided music actually changed the world. Between 1969 and 1979 disco soundtracked gay liberation, foregrounded female desire in the age of feminism and led to the birth of modern club culture as we know it today, before taking the world by storm. Sa. 17.12.2011: bleepgeeks with Ron Morelli (L.I.E.S. / New York) @ Eden, Ulm

Ron Morelli ist ein Juwel der New Yorker Underground Szene. Der Produzent, Labelbetreiber und Dj machte im pulsierenden und dauerhektischen Brooklyn der späten Neunziger das erste Mal auf sich aufmerksam. Damals noch als kompromissloser Hardcore Dj in Clubs wie dem Kunstprojekt ABC No Rio unterwegs, veröffentlichte Ron eine handvoll Punk 7-inches, die bis heute ein beeindruckendes Zeitdokument seines Schaffens als Hardocore- und Punkaktivist darstellen. Die Jahre vor und nach Millenium brachten ihn näher an die elektronische Musik. Vor allem waren es die "Raw-As-Fuck" Attitüden in den Veröffentlichungen von Labels wie Underground Resistance aus Detroit oder Bunker Records aus den Niederlanden, die es ihm ganz besonders antaten. Fortan widmete sich Morelli weitreichenden Studien der elektronischen Tanzmusik und landete als Angestellter im legendären Plattenladen A-1 Records in East Village, bei dem er bis heute arbeitet. Von dort aus betreibt Ron sein Label L.I.E.S. und veröffentlicht Killerplatten zwischen modernem House, Checkertechno und Synthesizerkapriolen, produziert von Künstlern wie Legowelt, Steve Summers oder Maxmillion Dunbar. Seine eigenen Produktionen sind durchweg analog hergestellte Housemonster, die er unter Pseudonymen wie Two Dogs In A House oder L.I.E.S. erfolgreich tarnt. Hauptsächlich ist Ron Morelli aber Vollblut Dj, der sexy New York Styled Dance Music spielt. From Head To Toe!!!

Veronica Vasicka on Minimal Wave

Veronica Vasicka is a photographer, DJ and musician. In 2003 she co-founded the Online-Radio-Station Eastvillageradio in New York, followed by the establishment of her own labels Minimal Wave(which is specialised in re-issuing lost recordings) and Cititrax(her imprint for newer productions in synth and re-issues of old italo/house classics) in 2005. She still runs her own radio broadcast on a weekly basis at Eastvillageradio.

Superpitcher @ Beats In Space Radio

I had a great pleasure playing a night with Superpitcher at Cabaret eden last summer. He is a really nice contemporary and after our gig i found myself being a little Superpitcher fan. Really! I stumbled across the Beats In Space website last evening and saw that Tim Sweeney had Aksel Schauffler(Superpitchers real name) as a guest in his radio show a few weeks back, exactly after 5 years again. I listened to the entire show and it really makes fun to do so. Tim is very easy going and Superpitcher is playing some nice tunes...Highly recommended!

Movie: Half Nelson

This is just one of the most breathtaking flicks i've seen lately! Based around the two central characters, which are played by Ryan Gosling and Shareeka Epps in a stunning way, Half Nelson portrays a Teacher-Student relationship in the suburbs of New York. The committed but drug addicted teacher gets caught while taking drugs by his likeable and intelligent student Drey and things begin to start. Beautifully photographed and played unobtrusively, Half Nelson is mega-worth to be watched! Alone or with all your friends!

Basil Hardhouse - The Smooth Track (1991)

This post is dedicated to my friend Ari from the Beautiful Swimmers, who reminded me of this little beauty from the deep and spectacular Nu Groove vaults!

The Record simply shows the vast diversity of our beloved and cult New York dance Label Nu Groove Records, which mainly operated from late eighties until the golden New York house years of the early nineties in an exemplary way(mistakenly considered by many as a straight House and Techno imprint). As the name implies, The Smooth Track is a dreamy, light and jazzy downbeat affair, spreading magic over eight minutes to get lost in it. I always want to have a repeat button on my turntable when i hear this! Thanks Ari, for making me dig this gem out again. Smooth greetings to D.C.!
